Hi everyone.
The UCD LGBTQ+ Society is entering its 37th official session. And we have been growing larger and larger with each passing year. Our society aims to be a safe space for all individuals in the LGBTQ+ community. Whether you’re a lesbian who’s out and proud, or a closeted transgender person who is unable to be your true self normally, our society guarantees you a safe and accepting space to be yourself. We also are accepting of any allies who are willing to be supportive and accepting of our community at large, and who wish to learn more about us in general.
We run many different types of events throughout the semester. These include, but are not limited to:
Coffee Morning/Afternoon Tea: A chill event where you can chat with folk and enjoy a cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate (hot drink drinking not mandatory).
Gaymes Night: A place to play some board gaymes with some gay people. We even have a few games that the UCD Games Society doesn’t have.
Film Screening: We like to screen some LGBTQ+ films sometimes. Films we have screened in the past (and will most likely screen again) include “The Mummy”, “Love, Simon” and “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”.
Other events include discussion spaces on various identities within the community, presentation parties, quiz nights and many more. We also like to collaborate with other societies.
We also hold five major events throughout the year. These include:
Transgender Day of Remembrance: A day where we remember all the transgender people who’ve lost their lives over the past year.
Intervarsity Sleepover: A sleepover in the Student Centre where we invite a bunch of LGBTQ+ societies from across Ireland and have fun, gaymes, food and some film screenings.
Ball: A formal event where we put on our best outfits and have some food and banter. The theme of our ball last year was Masquerade. Who knows what it will be this year?
Foy-Justice Award: Every year, the society nominates someone who has shown outstanding work within the community. Previous recipients of the award include Dr. Aleksandra Gajowy, Moninne Griffith and Ailbhe Smyth.
Gluepot: This is our annual publication, consisting of various art pieces and stories from people within the community. You could be involved in the making of it, if you so feel like it.
Whether you’re a veteran gay, or someone who’s still unsure of who you really are, please come on down to some of our events. We usually hold our events in the UCD Student Centre, but sometimes we may host one in the O’Brien Centre for Science or the Newman Building, for example. Details about upcoming events can be found on this page, as well as our social media (linked below). We also send out a weekly e-mail to all members of the society, written by our lovely Public Relations Officer, which details the events that week. So, don’t forget to mark our events in your calendar, otherwise you might miss them. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.
We look forward to welcoming members both new and old into the society.
Thank you for reading.
A screening of everyone’s favourite bisexual film. THIS FILM IS HAPPENING IN THE CINEMA, NOT MEETING ROOMS.
It’s Coffee. It’s Morning. But some of it is in the afternoon.
