The Economics Society has evolved from being one of UCD’s smallest societies to hosting the most popular and sold-out social events, while ensuring our members are kept up to date with news and topics surrounding current economic affairs. This can be seen through our live stream of the Budget, and our Guest-Speaker Series, where we have had the honour to host some of Ireland’s most renowned economists to date. Former recipients include Jim Power, Alan Cox and Chris Johns.
The Economics Society consistently hosts some of the most successful social events in UCD, including our fort-nightly coffee mornings, mystery tours, pub quizzes and mini-games at our freshers week stand. We also plan on hosting charity events throughout the year. Our social events greatly contribute to the success of our society and the college life experience for all UCD students.
Our flagship event of the year is our annual Economics Ball, a black tie event that takes place every February with hundreds of students enjoying exhilarating music, complementary food and free drinks.
However, when the partying season is put to a halt, and students decide to focus on their careers, the Economics Society organises a variety of events that are concerned with your future, including talks with post graduate students who are now working with some of Ireland’s leading firms, ensuring your post grad experience is as enjoyable as your college life.
The Economics Society is home to the Thomas Kettle award, an award we present to an individual in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the field of economics and public policy. It gets its name from Thomas Kettle, a former UCD alumni and founder of the UCD Legal and Economics Society. Former recipients of this award include Irish economists David McWilliams, Peter Sutherland, Patrick Honohan and Nobel Prize winner Joseph Stiglitz!
Although COVID-19 presents challenges to all societies, we are placing great concern when hosting our events online, with hopes to host small events in person when the time is right! We greatly encourage all students to join our society so that we can help you live your college life to the fullest!
